Lichfield Machine Knitting Club
Knit a House

Persimmon Homes who are building an estate in Lichfield, asked our club if we could knit a house for their show house

Here's how we did it:

We started by working out the scale to which we would build it and our member Nigel set about building a framework to which we could attach the knitting

Members set about knitting swatches to decide the colour and size of the brickwork and a punchard was made so that we could knit the brickwork in Fairisle

With Elevation drawings provided by Persimmon Homes and using a spreadsheet, we calculated the number of stitches and rows required to knit each of the elements required.

Wool was wound to enable more than one person to be knitting in the same colour and everyone set to work,

We tried brown for the roof, but then settled on grey with a black stripe, to look like tiles, we then felted the roof.

The walls were knitted, pinned out to size and steamed.

For the Windows, a piece of black was knitted and felted to enable them to be cut to size, the frames were knitted tubular in white, the doors being black tubular stitched to look like panels, the windows and doors were then attached to the brickwork following the elevation drawings for positioning.

The detail above and below windows was knitted like the brickwork.

Drainpipes knitted in black tubular, then stuffed and attached to the brickwork.

The Gas and electrical boxes were knitted then stuffed to make them 3D, with tubular knitting for the cables

Using Cut and Sew, we cut out the brickwork for the bay window which we had knitted separately

We then joined the walls together and put them on the framework like a jumper glueing them in place

A ridge for the roof knitted in grey, then stuffed with chunky yarn and using a curved needle stitched to the roof.  A chimney was knitted and also stitched to the roof and a front porch roof added.

After a lot of hard work we had a completed house
